The Labour Party says its calculations show the 50,000 Kiwis moving to Australia this year will depart some time today.

Leader David Shearer says more than 170,000 people have left New Zealand for Australia since National took office – and the reason for this is simple.

“We’re not focusing on jobs nearly as much as we should. We can’t have a Government which says ‘hands off, let the market sort this out’, the market is certainly not sorting it out,” party leader David Shearer told Firstline this morning.

He says his party is trying to focus on what is driving New Zealanders overseas and a recent 3 News Reid Research poll showing his party gaining support is a reflection of this work.

“Fifty thousand people for example going to Australia is an indictment of failure and they’re looking to other parties and saying, ‘Labour can do a better job.'’”
