National poaching Labour MPs

John Key has hinted that National is actively trying to poach current and former Labour MPs to jump ship ahead of the 2017 election.

It comes after ex-Porirua mayor and former paid-up Labour member Nick Leggett joined the National Party. He is the frontrunner to replace Hekia Parata as the party's Mana electorate candidate.

Now the Prime Minister has suggested more MPs may switch from red to blue.

When asked if the National Party had approached any Labour MPs, John Key gave a cagey grin and said they're "always" talking to people.

But he provided no clues as to whom - answering that question with: "See ya".

Mr Leggett resigned his Labour Party membership earlier this year so he could run for the Wellington Mayoralty against Labour-endorsed Justin Lester.

Newshub revealed on Wednesday that Leggett is now a paid-up member of the National Party, and intends to throw his hat in the ring to run for the Mana seat.

Newshub understands no other candidates have yet put their name forward to represent National in the Mana electorate.
