Poll: Labour's education policy preferred

Labour and National went head-to-head over education on The Nation this morning.

"Very few of us remember how many kids we had in our classroom, but we remember whether we had a good teacher or not," says Minister of Education Hekia Parata.

"Every parent knows that the more one-on-one time their child has with a teacher the better the quality of the learning," says Labour's education spokesman Chris Hipkins.

Voters have a choice. National wants to pay good teachers and principals more and get them to spend time helping other classrooms or schools. Labour wants to employ 2000 more teachers to reduce class sizes.

They cost about the same – National's $359 million and Labour's $403 million.

The latest 3 News poll shows voters prefer Labour's policy to reduce class sizes wins. Fifty-two percent like that better, beating National's policy to pay good teacher's more, with 40 percent.

Both opponents agree the other's policy has strengths.

So the voters' verdict goes with Labour and reducing class sizes. Education is a key battleground, and a slim points victory for Labour, they'll happily take that.
