David Shearer has been re-confirmed as the Labour Party’s leader this morning after the caucus had the first of their new annual leadership votes.

The secret ballot vote was held this morning in Auckland where Mr Shearer wanted to quash any remaining doubt over his ability to lead his party.

Under the party's new rules, Mr Shearer could have lost his job if just 40 percent of the party's members vote against him.

Mr Shearer's main rival for the leadership, David Cunliffe, didn’t launch a challenge today.

Labour MP Moana Mackey, who in previous leadership stoushes had supported David Cunliffe, says she backed David Shearer today.
