Canadian Amateur Jared du Toit is chasing history after he sits second on eight under after the third round of the Canadian Open.

The last Canadian to win their national Open was Pat Fletcher in 1954 while the last amateur to win on the PGA Tour was Phil Mickelson in 1991.

With a victory du Toit would also be the first player to win on their first tour start since Jim Benepe in 1988.

Du Toit hit a 40-ffot putt for eagle on the 18th to move him into second.

"Unbelievable, said du Toit.

"The atmosphere out here has been unbelievable. Walking to each green, each tee box, everybody hooting and hollering."

He is currently tied with world No.2 Dustin Johnson who had a one under par round.

"I had a rough day on the greens, said Johnson.

"It didn't feel like I was hitting bad putts. I don't know, ball was not going in the hole."

Johnson headed into day three with the lead, but a superb six under round by world no. 23 Brandt Snedeker propelled him to the front of the pack.

Snedeker hit five straight birdies on the front nine along with a birdie and eagle on the back nine.

World No.1 and defending champion Jason Day is two under for the tournament and barring a miracle, Day's grip on the trophy is gone after he managed a solid but not spectacular three-under-69 in the third round.

Kiwi Danny Lee is currently tied for 60th and would need a perfect round to have any chance of victory.
