Will Davison’s win at the Bathurst 1000 may be retracted after an appeal was filed by Red Bull Racing against their driver Jamie Whincup’s costly penalty.

After leading for the majority of the race, Jamie Whincup was ruled to have made an illegal overtaking manoeuvre on Kiwi Scott McLaughlin whose subsequent attempt to rectify resulted in another foul on Gareth Tander, and was subsequently penalised 15-seconds.

Despite taking the checkered flag, the penalty proved enough to drop the Australian from the podium completely, Davison moving into the top spot with New Zealand’s Shane van Gisbergen claiming second.

Whincup’s team have since lodged an appeal against the ruling which, if successful, would see their driver deemed the victor.

"We have protested the penalty because it is not consistent with what we've been told as to the way the rules are applied this year," Red Bull Racing team owner Roland Dane told speedcafe.com.

"Even if Jamie was at fault, the penalty according to the drivers' briefings this year is clear; either you redress or if you can't then it's a 10 point penalty.

"Either of those penalties could have been applied. That is why we have protested."

It isn’t known when a decision regarding the appeal is expected to be announced, but officials believe it should be swift.
