Beauden Barrett braced for Pumas onslaught

Changes may be forthcoming for the All Blacks' clash with Argentina in Buenos Aires on Sunday (NZT) but pivot Beauden Barrett believes the side is well placed to cater for any manner of tweaks.

The 25-year-old, currently in the midst of the most purple patch of his career to date, made mention of the versatility nurtured during trainings that helps make the All Blacks the most dangerously awkward proposition in world rugby.

"Everyone in the squad prepares to play so whatever the team will be, those players will be ready," said Barrett. "Obviously if there are changes we have to work on the combinations too.

"It's a way to keep us on our toes so that we're never too comfortable, we're learning other roles. It keeps the boys sharp.

"At one point Aaron Smith was talking about playing first-five, so quite a fair few.  Julian went into centre at one point."

The world champions were pushed hard through 50 minutes in their opening Rugby Championship contest in Hamilton before bolting clear down the stretch, and Barrett is under no illusions as to the threat the Pumas present.

"They're a top, top side in world rugby and we saw that at the world cup last year and we've seen that in this championship. They've been involved in Super Rugby and that's certainly helped.

"Not only are they big, strong boys, they're very skilful as well and play a good brand of rugby."

The Taranaki product echoed a familiar sentiment around the All Blacks camp this week, that a strong start would be vital to their cause, particularly as a means to quietening what is certain to be a parochial home crowd.

"We want a good start this week. It's a focus of ours every game, but in particular, Argentina come out firing and we have to match that, especially in their backyard."
