The mascot for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has been revealed as a blue koala named Borobi.

The mascot was helicoptered on to Burleigh Beach in front of a crowd this morning, taking his place alongside former Commonwealth Games mascots like Clyde the Thistle (Glasgow, 2014) and Shera the royal Bengal tiger (Delhi, 2010).

The surf-lifesaving Koala features sunscreen on his face and indigenous markings on his hands and feet.

Borobi is the creation of Brisbane teacher Merrilyn Krohn whose idea was picked after a national competition was held featuring 4000 entries.

Overall, social media users seemed pleased with the effort.

However, the real question is how Borobi stacks up next to Goldie the Kiwi who was the mascot for the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
