The Blues are feeling the effect of having All Black legend Tana Umaga as their new coach.

After falling to their worst ever season last year, which saw the three-time Super Rugby champions win just three of their 16 games, Umaga is whipping the once-proud franchise into shape.

The Blues are two-from-two in pre-season, marking an early upturn in form but All Blacks prop Charlie Faumuina says they're taking the results with a grain of salt.

"He's doing an awesome job," Faumuina said. "It all depends on when it comes to competition. Pre-season is good for confidence but you don't get any points there.

"He's got a good coaching team, they each have their specific roles and they're doing bloody well at it.

"His detailing he brings to his structures and stuff like that where he wants us to do a certain thing in a certain part of the field and he expects it to happen in a game and he's pretty hard on the boys making sure they do their jobs."

Faumuina said he enjoyed playing for a hero of his but hinted that it wasn't a good idea to get on the former Hurricanes star's bad side.

"He's got a good relationship with a lot of the players but you don't want to get on Tana's bad side, it's something you want to stay away from but when he's in a good a mood he's just one of the boys.

"I've had an earful from him too; it doesn't matter if you've been there the longest or it's your first year, you get an earful."
