There's set to be plenty more scrutiny over the NRL ref touch rule after Cameron Smith was named as captain of the Kangaroos for their Anzac Test against the Kiwis next month.

New Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga named Smith to skipper the Kangaroos for the 21st time today when they take on the Kiwis in Newcastle on May 6.

But the Maroons, Storm and Australia stalwart could be facing a charge from the NRL after touching the referee in Melbourne's 42-0 thrashing of the Warriors last night.

With referee Matt Cecchin in the way of a ruck on a Melbourne possession, Smith put both hands on him to move him out of the way.

The incident wasn't picked up on the field but he could still be cited by the match review committee.

There was an uproar from fans last week when Kiwi Panthers prop Sam McKendry was handed a one-game ban for touching a referee while Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston wasn't punished for a similar incident.

Kiwi fans could be claiming double standards if Smith is to get off without punishment.
