The North Queensland Cowboys' finals hopes have been thrown into turmoil with five players, including star forward Jason Taumalolo, facing court action after an alleged egg-throwing incident in Townsville on Wednesday night.
Kiwis international Taumalolo is the only first grade player charged with wilful damage after police discovered a number of eggs and cartons in his vehicle when stopped for a random breath test, reports the Brisbane Times.
A member of the public spotted the car being stopped and approached the officers, claiming they had seen the same vehicle throwing eggs at parked cars outside a nearby convenience store.
Taumalolo may be stood down from the side, but is more likely to receive a warning and fine due to charge's minor nature.
In a statement, Queensland Police said the men, a mix of lower grade Cowboys players, had allegedly entered the convenience store about 10pm and "purchased a number of eggs".
"As the men left the business, it will be alleged they threw eggs at five vehicles parked nearby, causing damage, before driving off in a vehicle," police said.
"A number of vehicles suffered minor damage in the alleged incident."
The Cowboys play the Storm for a place in the NRL Grand Final qualifier on Saturday night.
