Sunderland have named David Moyes as their new manager, replacing Sam Allardyce after his appointment as England's new coach.

The 53-year-old Moyes has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light, the English Premier League club said on Saturday in a statement.

"We are absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice," Sunderland chairman Ellis Short told the club's website.

Moyes spent last season at Spanish side Real Sociedad after being fired by Manchester United the previous season.

Sunderland finished 17th in the Premier League, with nine wins, twelve draws and seventeen losses.

Sunderland spent 31 of the possible 38 weeks in the relegation zone, before wins against Chelsea and Everton, along with a draw against Watford in their last three games was just enough to keep them in the top flight.
