Former Kiwi captain’s plea to New Zealand ahead of rugby league world cup

Former Kiwi’s captain Nathan Cayless no longer wants to be known as the only New Zealander to have held aloft the Rugby League World Cup.

In an event marking ‘one year to go’ before the world cup hits our shores, Cayless told Newshub today that hometown advantage could be the secret to the Kiwi’s success at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

"There is no higher honour than playing for your country and your family, but to have a full house at every game would be phenomenal and would be a massive support to the boys," Cayless said.

"We are urging the New Zealand public."

After a slow start to David Kidwell’s tenure as Kiwi’s coach, Cayless has full confidence that this Four Nations tour will be beneficial for their world cup preparations.

"It’s a results based business but having said that you do need to give Dave some time to really mould the team and get the structures in place that he needs."

And although the Kiwis recently suffered a 26-6 loss to the Kangaroos in Perth, the former Kiwi skipper would like to see players step up and take responsibility for basic errors moving forward.

"A couple of little things in their game against Australia in Perth, a couple of errors, some missed tackles, they’re not structural things they are individual things that they need to tidy up."

The ‘in your own backyard’ approach is set to reach all New Zealand rugby league fans and will see international matches played throughout the country at affordable prices.

The Kiwis open their world cup campaign facing Samoa at Mount Smart Stadium on October 28 2017 at 7.30pm.
