Ironman takes over Auckland Marathon

The Auckland Marathon could be set to go global after being secured by the Ironman brand.

New Zealand's biggest road race dates back to 1936 and last year more than 16,000 people took part.

Ironman Asia Pacific CEO Geoff Meyer believes the powerful Ironman brand could put Auckland on the map internationally.

"All the big events around the world, London, Chicago, New York, they're all fantastic events but this course would rival those," Meyer said.

"Our view would be to make sure that every marathon around the world would know about Auckland and then it's up to them to make the choice to come here."

Ironman will work with the Auckland Marathon team on this year's race, before taking over in 2015.
