Black Caps captain Kane Williamson's taking an attacking mind-set into the winner-takes-all Test against South Africa.

After the washout in the first Test in Durban, Williamson said it's about finding the right balance for the deciding Test starting in Pretoria tonight.

The weather affected draw in the opening match means a historic first series victory over the Proteas in South Africa is up for grabs.

"Our preparation is very much getting our head around this surface, adapting, learning a few lessons from the last game, and hopefully putting out a strong performance," said Williamson.

"It's an excited match for both teams."

The Centurion pitch isn't as green as what was produced in Kingsmead, but Williamson felt it looked a good Test wicket.

Pace bowler Doug Bracewell, who's being groomed as an all-rounder, may make way in the side for Ish Sodhi if the pitch is low and slow as predicted.

"We always pick the best team that we can, the best balance we can," Williamson added on team selection.

"I suppose it's nice to have that seam bowling all-rounder that is so sought after in any international side, but it's a luxury we don't really have at this stage.

"Someone like Doug Bracewell is certainly looking to try and play that all-rounder role and improve going forward.

"He can bat, and bat well, but I guess it's just experience at this top level that will continue his improvement with the bat.

"At the same time it's important you pick a side that can take 20 wickets in a Test."

The game starts tonight at 8pm (NZT).
