You can confidently label Ben Smith as the world's best fullback, but how would you rate him as a winger?

Smith was named alongside Israel Dagg, Damian McKenzie and Beauden Barrett as potential fullbacks, but could it be the Highlanders man moving out to the wing to accommodate?

Smith's filled the No.14 jersey on numerous occasions, and Hansen might plan to play him there again after heaping praise on the 29-year-old.

The All Blacks selectors decided to include just two halfbacks in their 32-man squad.

TJ Perenara was left out, but named as an injury replacement and will replace Tawera Kerr-Barlow for the first Test presumably as Aaron Smith's back up.

Selector Ian Foster addressed what they liked in TKB and Smith and why they felt comfortable with just two No.9s.

"Both him and Aaron do exactly what we want. They are quick to rucks and clear the ball really, really easily."

A new captain, a returning fullback and two new faces. The All Blacks are straight into the media photo shoots in Auckland.

How good does that Liam Squire mullet look in black? I can't tell what's more iconic a look. Squire's mullet, Ardie's flat top or Dagg's stache.

It's a tough pill for Jordan Taufua to swallow, but it appears his height (as well as lineout ability) has counted against him making the All Blacks squad.

Like Bart Simpson auditioning to be Radioactive Man's sidekick, Taufua is a few inches short of landing the role.

The All Blacks and Wales have a rivalry dating back to 1905 and have played each other 30 times, with 27 wins to New Zealand and three wins to the Welsh.

The two last met in November 2014 in Cardiff, with the All Blacks winning 34-16.

The last time Wales beat New Zealand was in December 1953, when they triumphed 13-8. They are yet to win in New Zealand.

Damian McKenzie received his All Blacks call while he was at Sydney airport with his Chiefs teammates.

Following Friday night's loss to the Waratahs, morale was no doubt low until the phone call came through for the young fullback.

"Most of the team knew obviously, when the phone went off everyone sort of jumped up so they were stoked for me."

A product of Christ's College, Damian McKenzie joins the likes of Robbie Deans, Jock Hobbs, Simon Maling and Joe Moody as former First XV players who would be selected for the National side.

McKenzie is arguably the form player of Super Rugby this season, and his trademark smirk has become somewhat annoying but still pretty endearing.

The Chiefs fullback would prefer to be in the battle for the coveted number 10 jersey, but his ridiculous turn of pace, and Christian Cullen like step, has seen the 21-year-old cement his spot in Steve Hansen's 32 as a back-up fullback.

McKenzie was pegged for higher honours as a 17-year-old and just four years later the young man has reached the pinnacle of New Zealand Rugby.

Israel Dagg joked that he's expecting coach Steve Hansen to give him a tap on the shoulder about shaving off his moustache.

"I mainly want to keep it because everyone hates it. I haven't had any positive vibes from anyone."

"Liam Squire is as close as you get to a bolter these days, and the 25-year-old No.8 is an extremely exciting prospect.

"The big Highlanders number eight hurts people, it's that simple. Both on defence and attack the 113kg, 198cm Squire is a menace."

Ardie Savea's decision to pull out of Olympic sevens rugby contention has paid off with his selection for the All Blacks.

"No matter what happened, if I didn't make the squad, I'm happy with the decision I made," the 22-year-old said.

"I had a gut feeling and a change of heart. I wanted to stay in 15s and focus on my 15s career."

The 32-strong selection includes older brother Julian, a 41-cap winger.

"It's awesome; it doesn't come around often," Savea said of brothers as All Blacks.

"It's good to be here with him. I'm sick and tired of seeing his face around in Wellington," he quipped.

Newshub rugby experts Ross Karl and John Day give their quick-fire thoughts on the All Blacks squad.

"Tom Franklin is an absolute bolt of the blue," says Day. "Any injuries and Tom Franklin will become an All Black."

We all know the All Blacks lost plenty of veterans after the 2015 Rugby World Cup when Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Tony Woodcock and Keven Mealamu stepped away from international rugby.

Well here is what experience remains...

Kieran Read: 84 Test caps

Owen Franks: 78 Test caps

Samuel Whitelock: 73 Test caps

Jerome Kaino: 67 Test caps

Israel Dagg: 49 Test caps

Ben Smith: 48 Tests

Aaron Smith and Brodie Retallick: 47 Test caps

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is keen to move on from the 2015 Rugby World Cup victory.

"A lot of teams and various people around the world probably believe we're a little bit vulnerable and to that I can assure you that's not our mindset.

Our mindset is not one of rebuilding but one of re-establishing. Our challenge is taking this team to a higher level than where we left off at the World Cup."

Not everyone can make the squad, but we reckon these six players were in with a shout.

Who do you was unlucky to miss out?

Seta Tamanivalu didn't always dream of playing for the All Blacks, in fact growing up wanting to play Sevens for his native Fiji.

Tamanivalu came over to New Zealand in 2011 and it wasn't until he started watching the All Blacks games on television did he crave a piece of the action.

The Taranaki and Chiefs flyer set himself the goal of making the squad after the 2015 World Cup final.

The All Blacks squad is made up of four Blues players, eight Chiefs, four Hurricanes, nine Crusaders and seven Highlanders.

Comprising of 18 forwards and 14 backs, the average age of the squad is just 25.

The 'bolter' of Steve Hansen's squad, Liam Squire has only played 22 Super Rugby games since his debut for the Chiefs against his current side, the Highlanders in 2014.

Squire plays his provincial rugby for the Tasman, having earned 38 caps.

Squire was called into the All Blacks wider training squad in 2014 after impressing the selectors in his debut Super Rugby season.

The 25-year-old is an integral part of the machine knows as the Highlanders forward pack and his 2016 form has been impressive, especially on defence and in the lineouts.

Squire claims his greatest rugby moment was winning an under 8 sevens tournament in 1999.

The moment hasn't yet sunk in for Liam Squire, who still can't believe he was named in the All Blacks squad.

The Highlanders No.8 admits he didn't see the call coming, labeling his selection as a "bit of a surprise".

Israel Dagg couldn't stop smiling as he fronted the media after being recalled to the All Blacks team.

Dagg's been in fantastic form for the Crusaders, but admits he wasn't sure this day would come again.

The 49-Test All Black is grateful to get another chance in black and said he felt like he was going back to school.

The Highlanders loose forward made his Super Rugby debut in 2012 and was an integral part of the southern men's run to the 2015 title.

Dixon has played 61 times for the Highlanders and has 50 caps for Southland in provincial rugby.

The Canterbury born flanker went to St Bede's College and has also played 10 games for the Maori All Blacks.

Dixon went razor close to making the World Cup squad last year and his 2016 Super Rugby form has ensured his selection in Steve Hansen's 32-man.

The new All Black was also part of the brilliant 2009 under-20 New Zealand team that won the World Cup, playing with the likes of Zac Guildford, Aaron Cruden and Tom Taylor.

Highlanders loose forward Elliot Dixon was asleep when he got the phone call letting him know he was in the All Blacks squad.

Told on Saturday morning follow a tough game against the Hurricanes, Dixon said he almost didn't answer it when he saw it was an unknown number calling.

It will be a day the 26-year-old will never forget as he later celebrated his son's first birthday later that day.

There was plenty of discussion as to who will be named as Ben Smith's back up at fullback, and the selectors have chosen to name both Israel Dagg and Damian McKenzie in the squad.

Selector Grant Fox is excited to work with McKenzie, a player he's labelled as "explosive for a little guy".

Where does Jordan Taufua fit into the All Blacks equation? The Crusaders loose forward has been playing some great rugby, but is there room for him in the squad?

Five minutes to go until the first All Blacks Test squad of the year is named. We will post the team here and then have reactions throughout the day so be sure to check back in regularly on this page.

Will this be Ardie Savea's year? Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd believes his loose forward is an obvious choice for the All Blacks squad.

"If there is two better 7s in the country at the moment than Ardie, then I'm blind."

Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie could be named in his first All Blacks squad today and he's already met with the selectors.

McKenzie, 21, said he's already been told where he can improve.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph knows it's only a matter of time until Elliot Dixon is called into the All Blacks squad.

"I have no doubt he'll be an All Black at some stage. He'll be a very good All Black."

Good morning and welcome to live updates of the first All Blacks Test squad naming of the year. The 32-man squad will be named at 10:00 (NZT), but in the meantime we'll run you through some potential All Blacks call ups.
