Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi has taken out the 2015 Ballon d'Or ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Neymar.

The award, which is presented to the world's best player, has been won by Ronaldo for the last two years – but Messi has now broken a record by becoming the first player to win the award five times.

The forward enjoyed a spectacular year with Barcelona, playing an important role in helping his side win a cup treble as they secured the La Liga, Champions League and the Copa del Rey titles.

Speaking at the Ballon d'Or ceremony, Messi said winning his fifth award was "a very special moment".

“It’s incredible to win a fifth, more than anything I ever dreamed of as a kid. Especially after watching from the crowd as Cristiano won last year," he said.

“I want to thank those who voted for me, plus my teammates. Without them this wouldn’t be possible."
