Race driver Bryan Clauson has died following a horror crash at the weekend in a USAC midget race in Kansas.

Clauson had just taken the lead in the 39th Belleville Kansas Midget Nationals when he went to lap a trailing car that had stalled.

Amateur video shows Clauson's car flipping end-over-end along the guardrail before coming to a rest in the middle of the track. A car driven by Ryan Greth crashed into Clauson's, sending both tumbling.

Clauson, 27, was one of the United States' top short-track dirt-car drivers, having won four USAC national championships. He has also started three Indianapolis 500s since 2012, briefly taking the lead in this year's race before finishing 23rd.

It was the second bad crash for Clauson this week, after taking a "tough hit" in Friday's preliminary race. He tweeted thanks to makers of his safety equipment and chassis.

The accident happened at the Belleville High Banks, an 800m dirt oval 320km northwest of Kansas City. Clauson won the event last year, his fourth victory at the track. He had started ninth in this race.

Clauson was hoping to compete in 200 races this season. The weekend's race was number 116. He had his 27th victory of the season on Wednesday in Beloit, Kansas.

Chad Boat, son of former midget champion and IndyCar Series driver Billy Boat, won Saturday's race.
