New Zealand has been denied gold in the 49er FX women's by Brazil in a thrilling medal race at the Rio Olympics.

Just one point separated Spain, Brazil, Denmark and New Zealand going into the 49er FX women's medal race, and the duo of Alex Maloney and Molly Meech managed to charge home in second.

New Zealand made a strong start against the other medal contenders, sitting second after the first lap behind Italy, who were already out of medal contention.

Brazil challenged the Kiwis in the final leg, and despite a late charge for the Kiwis to hold on, it was the locals who would win gold.

The medal takes New Zealand's haul in Rio to 14, a record surpassing London 2012 and Seoul 1988.

The record for most gold medals by New Zealand is eight, which they achieved in Los Angeles in 1984.
