Northern Districts will become the first of the six major associations in New Zealand to pay female cricketers.

ND will offer retainer packages of between $500 and $4000, depending on ranking, to their contracted Northern Spirit players, who were previously compensated only for travel.

Chief executive Peter Roach says that, while the packages did not amount a salary, it was important to support the players, many of whom have family, study or work commitments.

"It is simply the right thing to do," he said.

"Players striving to play at the top level give up a lot to chase their dreams."

The list of contracted Northern Spirit players will be be released in August.
