Polish Olympian discus thrower Piotr Malachowski is auctioning off his silver medal from the Rio Olympics to help treat a young boy's illness.

Malachowski announced on his Facebook page that he will be selling his medal to help raise funds for Olek Szymanski, a 3-year-old Polish boy who suffers from retinoblastoma.

According to Malachowski, the rare form of cancer isn't treatable in Poland and is only offered in New York.

"There is no chance of saving Olek's eyes in Poland. The only chance is therapy in New York," Malachowski wrote on Facebook.

"In Rio, I fought for the gold. Today I appeal to everyone - let's fight together about something that is even more precious."

A Polish charity foundation called Siepomaga has already raised around a third of the roughly 480,000 zlotys (NZ$172,753) needed to finance Szymanski's treatment.

Malachowski said all the proceeds from the auction, which closes on Saturday (NZT), will go towards helping Szymanski.

"I invite everybody to join the bidding. If you help me, my silver medal may be more valuable for Olek than gold."

The auction currently sits at 75,100 zloyts (NZ$27,000).
