Kiwi Cyclist Shane Archbold is out of the Tour De France after breaking his pelvis during a crash.

Archbold, a member of German team Bora-Argon 18, crashed while traveling at around 80km/h on stage 17, which stretches from Berne to Finhaut-Emosson stage.

The 27-year-old Timaru rider crashed into a wall 105km into the stage on the descent after the second King of the Mountain climb up the category three Col des Mosses.

Archbold was examined by the tour doctor before remounting and struggling through to finish the stage in the grupetto at the back of the field, 39 minutes behind stage winner Ilnur Zakarin.

One of Archbold's teammates, Irishman Sam Bennett, rode with him to the finish and said the Kiwi had shown impressive resolve to carry on.

"I've never seen somebody go through so much pain - he's so hard, it's unbelievable," Bennett told cyclingweekly.co.uk.

Greg Henderson, riding for Belgian team Lotto Soudal, also helped his compatriot across the line, afterwards lauding Archbold on Twitter for his tenacity.
