Silver Ferns shooting circle providing questions for Janine Southby

Janine Southby's first big call as Silver Ferns netball coach is to find a new shooting combination.

With Maria Tutaia injured, Southby's options are limited to 26 cap Bailey Mes, four cap Ameliaranne Ekenasio and rookies Maia Wilson and Te Paea Selby-Rickit.

With today being the first training together for this new-look Ferns side, Southby is looking at the options on hand before making a choice on who will partner likely first-choice Mes in the shooting circle.

"We have lots of options we are still looking at, so at this point in the week I haven't made that decision," said Southby.

The focus on the new Ferns coach is to bring together the combinations from the ANZ Championship and blend them together is a style she has implemented.

"These girls have come off pretty intense franchise competitions and they have been playing against the best every week, so now for us it is getting the focus on the connections between them because they haven't been playing together."

For the most experienced member of the attacking end of the court, this week is about embracing her newly found leadership role.

"I have been around for a few years and this is a good chance to step up and show a bit of leadership," said Mes.

"We have some really good combinations out there, it's really exciting."

The world number two ferns play England in Auckland on Saturday before heading to Hamilton to take on South Africa. They round up the quad series against Australia on September 4th in Melbourne.
