NBL side Sydney Kings have signed NBA star Steve Blake in one of the biggest signings in the NBL's history.

The 36-year-old was once starting point guard at the Los Angeles Lakers playing alongside the likes of Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

It is expected that he will slot into the third import spot at the Kings after the Sydney franchise released Michael Bryson just a few days ago.

He will line up alongside power forward Josh Powell, who won championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010 but departed prior to Blake's arrival in LA.

"He's a very good player and extremely competitive," Powell told Fox Sports News on Saturday.

"It's just good to have somebody that has that experience and leadership to go along with the guys in the group that we have. I look forward to it and I know everybody else does as well."

Blake played for eight NBA franchises over the course of 13 years after winning the NCAA Championship with Maryland in 2002 and being selected by the Washington Wizards as the 38th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

With solid but not particularly outstanding career averages of 6.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.1 rebounds per match, the Kings will likely look for Blake to be a consistent starter.

Currently on the roster of the Detroit Pistons, it's expected that he'll arrive in Sydney in the next week.
