All Whites coach Anthony Hudson has said he will consider controversial defender Tommy Smith for the national squad again following meetings between the pair to improve relations.

Having previously indicated he'll no longer consider Smith for selection, Hudson has performed a U-turn following a series of open and honest discussions with the experienced defender.

Smith had not made himself available for All Whites in the past, as he wanted to focus on playing for his club side, Ipswich Town.

But while Hudson was in England recently, Smith reached out to him and apologised for his lack of communication in recent times.

"If I had stuck to my guns and not looked at that, I don't think that would have been right for the team. Especially as the national team coach I don't think that would have been the right thing to do," said Hudson.

"We have another good, experienced professional coming back into the squad. I am really pleased we have not only a quality player but also a good character."

The former captain of the national side was apologetic in regards to his recent behaviour and expressed his enthusiasm to get back among the team fold.

"I had to apologise to Anthony for my lack of communication, and basically the conversation based around me expressing my desire to be considered for selection once again," said Smith.

"It was kind of him to agree to meet me. He didn't have to do that but I appreciated his time.

"Anthony [Hudson]clearly outlined his requirements and his expectations regarding commitment to the squad and the cause going forward.

"I understand what those expectations are and I will endeavour to uphold the values that he has got in the future.

"I love pulling on the fern and it means a great deal every time I pull on that shirt."

Smith has played in one game under Hudson against China, and Hudson was impressed with what he saw in Smith.

"Tommy was like a captain. He was a leader in the group. I told him that personally that he could have been our captain that week," said Hudson.

"What's done is done and Tommy is available for selection. He is fully committed and he understands, like the rest of the team, what commitment looks like going forward towards Russia.

"I think the only way he can repay the fans is by committing to the football team and showing on the pitch he wants to fight for New Zealand."

The All Whites' next match is against New Caledonia on November 12 in the OFC Stage Three World Cup Qualifiers, for which Smith will be unavailable to play as he recovers from back surgery.
