New Zealand's swimmers will wear a revolutionary new swimsuit in their quest for Rio and beyond.

The Adidas suit was launched today and is designed by the same technicians that developed the All Blacks jersey for the Rugby World Cup.

The suits are the product of three and a half years of hard work, and the cutting edge technology includes specially designed bands on the suit that help the swimmers body position in the water, ultimately increasing speed.

Deborah Yeomans, one the head engineers from Adidas, said they looked at the kinetic chain which is a series of linking muscles.

On swimmers the key muscle is where the suit is crossed over at the back, which is the linking point of the top and bottom half of the body. So they designed the bands around these muscles to help the swimmers achieve their ultimate performance.

The swimmers will wear the suits at the National Championships in Auckland in March - an event that doubles as Olympic qualification.
