Luke Moore opened the scoring with a free header before David Nugent secured the victory late in the second half from the penalty spot.
Elsewhere, Burnley drew with Blackburn 1-1 to hold onto their spot in the top six.
Junior Stanislas gave Burnley the lead with a cracking goal before goal-machine Jordan Rhodes got Blackburn level with a lucky goal.
Meanwhile, there were wins for Ipswich, QPR, Leeds, Derby, Blackpool and Nottingham Forest.
