Outgoing Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum may not have ended his international career with a win, but he still put in a classy performance after the loss to Australia.

Speaking to the crowd at Hagley Oval following the seven-wicket loss to Australia, McCullum took some time to say thanks to his teammates, family and fans.

The 34-year-old described his teammates as "great men" who had bought into a vision for the side.

"We've achieved some pretty cool things and, hey, we've lost some games as well but we've got our soul back and you're absolutely great men and for the rest of my life I'll remember the time we've had playing for New Zealand," McCullum said.

"Good luck to you all and we've got plenty of beers to drink."

But it was for his family that McCullum saved his biggest thanks, saying he would pay them back for the rest of his life after allowing him to live his dream.

"Coming in as a 20-year-old kid and leaving as a 34-year-old with three beautiful kids and an amazing wife and a career behind you, you step into the next phase with an element of sadness with what you're leaving behind but also a huge amount of excitement about what's in front of you," McCullum said.
