England's finest gravy wrestlers have gathered in Lancashire for the 10th annual World Gravy Wrestling Championships.

Over 1000 litres of Britain's finest meat sauce was on hand as 16 competitors battled in front of hundreds of spectators in aid of the East Lancashire Hospice.

Each bout lasts two minutes, the judges taking stock of both entertainment and grappling skills in determining a winner.

Organiser Andy Holt warned against underestimating the physically demanding nature of the contests.

"It really does take it out of you, even if it is just two minutes," Holt told BBC News.

Holt is also responsible for the production of the gravy itself, a recipe he's recently had to adjust after the original caused swarms of wasps to attack the contestants.

"It is crazy, but it is all about having fun, and it is for a great cause."
