Kiwi rower Emma Twigg has proven taking a year off from professional rowing hasn't hindered her performance, coming first in the first round at the high stakes 'Regatta of Death' in Switzerland.

The 2014 World Champion has been forced to make a last-ditch attempt to qualify for Rio after taking time off in Europe to complete a Master's Degree.

Twigg needs a top-four finish to book an Olympic berth, while the four other Kiwi crews need to finish in the top two.

Rowing New Zealand's goal is to field a crew in all 14 Olympic classes in Rio, with nine having automatically qualified at last year's world championships.

Twigg spoke to Europe Correspondent Tova O'Brien after easing her way into the semi-finals.
