Video: Explosive allegations detailed in rowing pair's book

Reunited after Rio, it's been a long three months since Eric Murray was last with his family at home.

On the shelf is a shiny new souvenir, and on the table a new book released tomorrow, The Kiwi Pair, which reveals in detail the true price of gold.

Murray and Hamish Bond's gold-plated partnership nearly broke down before a medal was won.

Before the world championships in 2011, Murray says selectors from Rowing New Zealand tried to get Bond to push him out of the boat.

His crime?

He'd asked to train at home for a week so he could see his wife Jackie give birth to their son.

"They didn't want a bar of it," said Murray.

Rowing New Zealand selector Conrad Roberton, an Olympic gold medallist himself, allegedly told Ms Murray the baby could derail his career.

"Conrad just went on the attack," said Ms Murray.

"He told me I was irresponsible and selfish and I'd ruin Eric's rowing career."

The book also details an expletive-laden tirade allegedly delivered by former coach Dick Tonks, when Bond asked for a day off to spend with his partner.

Newshub reached out today both to the men at the centre of those two incidents from Murray and Bond's book but Tonks did not respond, and Robertson wouldn't comment.

Right now, Murray's happy to be home spending time with his family, and two gold medals are perhaps evidence enough they've never got in the way.
