Canterbury were made to work hard in their 52-34 win over Northland at Toll Stadium in Whangarei.

Heading into the game as massive favourites , the defending champions were challenged at times against a Northland side missing three key players.

It took Marshall Suckling less than two minutes before he ducked across for the games first try, winger George Bridge making it two from the restart, and Johnny McNicholl adding the third before 10 minutes had ticked over.

Suckling added a second try after 22 minutes.

Despite trailing 20-3, Northland continued to fight and attacked the try line, and after five phases lock Josh Goodhue pushed his way over the line.

That try sparked Northland to life, but the home side could only add a penalty goal.

Canterbury winger George Bridge then crossed for his second; then Jack Goodhue crossed for Canterbury's sixth try on the stroke of halftime.

Canterbury led 32-13 at the break.

Northland lock Josh Goodhue then crossed for his second, which was identical to his first.

Matt Todd then crossed for Canterbury off some skilled passing by outside backs.

Immediately from the restart, Josh Goodue charged down Ben Volavola's kick to cross for his third of the night, which was then followed up with prop Howard Sililoto crossing for Northland's fourth.

Jordie Barrett crossed for Canterbury's eighth try of the night.

The game had a bad end when Canterbury prop Leroy Atalifo was given a yellow card for throwing punches.

Richie Mo'unga and Jordie Barrett added a penalty goal each to take the score over 50.

Northland will play Bay of Plenty next weekend while Canterbury will face off against the winless Hawke's Bay.
