Hawke's Bay have notched their first win of the Mitre 10 Cup season after running away with a 43-29 win over the Southland Stags in Invercargill.

The Magpies ran in six tries with the final coming to Ihaia West in his 50th game for the province.

Southland kept themselves in the game through five penalties off the boot of Wharenui Hawera, but despite holding a 12-10 halftime lead, could only cross the Hawke's Bay line twice.

The win helps Hawke's Bay fight off relegation for another week, moving them up to eight points on the table and just one behind Tasman in the Premiership division.

Southland are still looking for their first win of the season and remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.
