Recalled Black Caps spin bowler Jeetan Patel is crediting seven years of grind in county cricket as the reason for his bowling improvement, since he last represented New Zealand in January 2013.

The 36-year-old is likely to replace Mark Craig in the starting 11 for the second Test beginning tonight in Kolkata.

Patel, who plies his trade with Warwickshire, was named by Widen as one of its five cricketers of the year in 2015.

The off-spinner said the day in – day - out nature of the English domestic game has made him a better bowler.

"I've played eleven months for seven years now on the bounce with a month off every year," he said.

"It's meant that I've bowled a lot of overs, but the reality is that spinners need to be bowling overs and I'm lucky enough to be able to do that now."

Patel is excited to have the opportunity to have another shot at the highest level, and join a great team environment under Kane Williamson.

"I didn't think I would ever play Test cricket again, but to come over and join a young bunch of lads going somewhere is pretty special."

The 19 test veteran has been criticised in the past mental fragility when put under pressure, and while he acknowledges that he is still not sure if he has what it takes to perform, all he can do is prepare as best as he can and the results will come.

"I don't know if anyone is ready to play Test cricket, you just turn up an do your job and hopefully you have done enough work to go out there and execute your skill and I think that's what it's about."

Despite another solid county season in 2016, Patel's numbers didn't match those of last year, but he is confident the work he has put in this year will benefit him if selected.

"It's been a testing season, but it's another challenge tomorrow against a high quality side.

"I'm going to have to be at my best.

"The overs I have under my belt hopefully help me out there tomorrow if I get the nod."

The Test is due to get underway at 5pm today (NZT).
