Two close losses for the All Blacks Sevens on day two has seen them finish as plate runners-up in Singapore.

The New Zealanders went down 12-7 to South Africa in the Cup quarterfinals before thrashing Australia to reach the plate final which they lost 26-21 to Samoa.

Coach Sir Gordon Tietjens isn't dwelling on the result too much with the Rio Olympics closing in.

"Disappointed to lose [to Samoa] on full time, but if I had to look at what we've achieved over these last two days we've developed some good young players and given them an opportunity, and that's what happens when you get a few injuries in your team," Tietjens said.

Tietjens praised Sonny Bill Williams for his efforts over the weekend.

"I thought he [Williams] excelled in this tournament. He's just getting better and better in each game and tournament that he plays."

Much needed Super Rugby reinforcements are available for the last two tournaments in London and Paris, with Rieko and Akira Ioane, Ardie Savea and Augustine Pulu expected to be named if they don't succumb to any injuries playing 15-a-side.

Kenya were the surprise Cup champions in Singapore, winning the final 30-7 against Fiji.

The Fijians still lead the World Series by eight points over South Africa with New Zealand dropping to third, twelve points off the pace.
