Video: Tomic returns serve with backwards racket

It was another day to forget on clay for Bernard Tomic who exited at the first hurdle for the third successive tournament going down to Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-4 at the Madrid Open.

That match ended on a sour note for Tomic, who turned his racket around for the final point.

Fognini was being cheered on by the crowd as he prepared to serve for the match, but it quickly turned to silence as the crowd realised what the Australian was doing.

Tomic shrugged his shoulders as he was aced, before congratulating Fognini and making a quick escape.

Tomic has come under the spotlight before for his poor attitude and has been referred to as "Tomic The Tank Engine".

Fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios is through to the second round of the Madrid Open following a hard-fought 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 win over Argentina's Guido Pella.

The world No.21 slammed down 16 aces against the player ranked 50th in the world and will now face old foe Stan Wawrinka for a place in the third round.
