Wellington will host a Twenty20 double-header in December with the Melbourne Stars' men's and women's teams coming over for a match to face the Wellington Firebirds and Wellington Blaze.

It will be the first time that both men's and women's teams from the hugely successful Big Bash competition have played in New Zealand.

The 'Basin Blast' will be played on Wednesday December 7, with the women's match starting at 12pm, and the men's match at 4pm.

Former Blackcaps captain Stephen Fleming is the current head coach of the Melbourne Stars, and admitted this was something which had been discussed in the past.

"We have been working on this for some time," he said. "We flirted with the idea last year and took the plunge this year.

"I'm very familiar with the Basin and the Wellington Firebirds, and I know this is exactly the sort of preparation we're looking for before we launch our own campaign."

Fleming played for the Firebirds for a decade, between 2000 and 2009.

The Stars will be bringing their strongest available line-up, which will be captained by David Hussey and include a swathe of T20 specialists including Luke Wright, Ben Hilfenhaus and Evan Gulbis.

Australian captain Meg Lanning will lead a full strength women's Melbourne Stars squad.
