Waikato have successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield after beating King Country 55-0 at Bedford Park in Matamata.

Waikato outscored their Heartland Championship oponents eight tries to none under grey skies and persistent rain.

First half tries from Brian Alainu'uese, Jordan Trainor and a double from Hame Faiva gave the Mooloos a 29-0 halftime lead.

Loose-forward Murray Ita opened the scoring in the second half before three tries in the final six minutes as Sevu Reece, Matty Lansdown and Tevita Taufui all crossed to set up the big win.

Waikato will have one more defence before the Mitre10 Cup season begins against Wanganui in Cambridge on August 6. The Mitre10 Cup season kicks off on August 18.
