A Plunket Shield match in Wellington has been delayed and the Blackcaps opening Test in Christchurch is in doubt after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near Culverdon overnight.

The Shield match between the Firebirds and the Central Districts Stags at the Basin Reserve in Wellington was to start Monday morning, however it has been delayed at least until Tuesday until buildings in the ground have been checked by engineers for structural damage.

The earthquake has also cast doubt over the Blackcaps' opening Test against Pakistan at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, with the city reportedly sustaining damage from the quake.

However, no announcement has yet been made by New Zealand Cricket.

Hagley Oval became Christchurch's home of cricket after AMI Stadium at Lancaster Park closed indefinitely due to severe damage it sustained after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Other Plunket Shield matches in Invercargill and Mount Maunganui respectively have started according to schedule.
