At nine years old, girls should be worried about which hairstyle to choose for school, not about the colour of their skin.

Despite numerous protests and speeches by officials about the 'Black lives matter' movements, it is the heartfelt words of Zianna Oliphant that have grabbed the attention of the world.

In a speech to the Charlotte city council, Zianna told the mayor and the councillors about what it is like to be her.

"We are black people and we shouldn't have to feel like this. We shouldn't have to protest because y'all are treating us wrong."

Dozens of people spoke before the Charlotte City Council asking for the resignation of the mayor and police chief after the shooting of Kevin Lamont Scott.

"I was born and raised in Charlotte, and I have never felt this way until now. I can't stand how we are treated. "

Zianna was encouraged by applause to speak through her tears as she became overwhelmed with emotion.

"We have tears, and we shouldn't have tears," she said.
