A baby elephant has been pulled alive from a drain in Sri Lanka after it fell and broke its leg.
Surrounded by muddy clay, officials had to knock out the narrow drain with hammers, a chisel and blowtorch.
A wildlife rescue team and onlookers tied ropes around the forelegs of the baby elephant, and pulled it out of the drain in the town of Hambantota after a few attempts.
Elephants are common in the southern port town, and strategies have been put in place to try and achieve human elephant co-existence in the area.
The area was hit hard by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and is undergoing major development projects.
