A legacy made of two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun, has been left today.

Michael James ‘Jim’ Delligatti, the McDonald’s franchisee who created the Big Mac burger almost 50 years ago has died.

Up until a few years ago, Mr Delligatti ate at least one 540-calorie Big Mac a week, his son Michael told CNN.

That took him to the ripe old age of 98, dying in his home surrounded by his family.

McDonalds tweeted about Mr Delligatti’s death, calling his lifetime “98 inspirational years”

Today McDonald's sells 900 million Big Macs a year worldwide. The burger can be found in more than 100 countries.

The recipe has not been changed since its creation in 1967.
