Glass door stops thief in his tracks

A thief in Australia had his quick getaway foiled when a mall door fought back – but it wasn't enough to stop him completely.

Police said the man had snatched a handbag from a 50-year-old woman inside a Perth shopping centre yesterday.

He then tried to flee, but ran head-first into a glass door and knocked himself out.

CCTV footage showed the culprit running and crashing into the glass, knocking him flat on the ground.

"He made a pretty heavy impact. When he actually hit the glass he was knocked out," shop owner Greg Rice said.

According to the police report, bystanders, who were unaware of the robbery, assisted the man before an accomplice appeared and ordered they let him go.

"When I first came out here, I didn't realise it was a bag snatch either," said Mr Rice. "I didn't know what went on, really. I just thought somebody ran into the door, but as it turned out, when I saw how keen he was to get away, we realised something was up," he said.

The CCTV footage showed tattoo shop owner Jake Adams rushing out and grabbing the alleged suspect.

"He said 'I've got a gun, I've got a gun, I'm gonna shoot you, I'm gonna shoot you'," said Mr Adams. "So, I picked the guy up in front of me, like they do in the movies and held him in front of me."

Western Australia police say the alleged thief and accomplice left the scene in a stolen green Lexus. They are continuing to search for the two men.
