Hillary Clinton gets Democratic nomination

Hillary Clinton has become the first female presidential nominee of a major party in US history.

The largely ceremonial voice vote at the Democrat National Convention in Philadelphia went as predicted, with delegates from all US states and territories pledging their support for 68-year-old Clinton.

The biggest cheer of the evening came when Clinton's main opponent for the Democrat ticket, Bernie Sanders, voiced his support, meaning the Presidential campaign has now officially come down to a two horse race between Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Clinton made history by becoming the first woman to secure a US presidential nominee, but she is far from a political novice unlike Trump, having worked at the elite level of US politics since the turn of the century.

Clinton's husband Bill Clinton, a former US president, will take to the stage in a highly anticipated speech at the Democrat convention in a few hours to close day two.
