A man in Sydney has been charged over a knife attack police say was inspired by terror group Islamic State.
Ihsas Khan, 22, is charged with committing a terrorist act and attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a stranger, before also trying to stab police.
The incident took place on a reserve on Olhlfsen Road at Minto around 4pm on Saturday (local time).
The victim, a 59-year-old man, was walking his dog through the park when he was attacked and given 'life-threatening injuries'.
The Joint Counter Terrorism Team - made up of investigators from the New South Wales and Australian Federal Police - laid the charges against Khanthis morning.
"This is the new face of terrorism, this is the new face of what we deal with," said Deputy Police Commissioner Cath Burn.
"We know that this person has strong extremist beliefs inspired by ISIS. What made him actually act yesterday, we don't know."
The attack took place just one week after the notorious Syria and Iraq-based terrorist organisation renewed its calls for lone wolves to attack in Australia.
Police say Khan may have attacked the stranger in order to lure law enforcement officers to the area.
"There was some degree of planning and preparation to something just before the incident happened," says Ms Burn.
"We will be alleging this was an act that was inspired ISIS... It was a deliberate act yesterday it resulted in a person receiving extremely serious injuries."
Although Khan was known to police and has faced charges before, he was not on any terrorism watch lists.
Police praised members of the community who are said to have acted quickly after seeing the attack.
