Royal protocol usually dictates that if you have an appointment to meet the Queen, it is Her Majesty who does the receiving.

But today it was Princess Charlotte, who at just three days old granted the Queen an audience. Her Majesty spent about an hour with her new great granddaughter.

She wasn't the only visitor at Kensington Palace however – a registrar came from the Westminster registry office. Prince William signed the papers himself – in the box for his occupation writing 'Prince', and Catherine's, 'Princess of the United Kingdom'.

And the prince took two lines to fill out his own name: 'His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge.'

With formalities out of the way, the Duke and Duchess are expected to depart for their Norfolk home, where they'll spend the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Legoland Windsor has updated its royal scene to include the new arrival.

Charlotte joins her parents and older brother, Prince George, outside Buckingham Palace at the theme park's Miniland attraction. The scene took 24 hours to build, and includes a 7cm-tall double buggy for the new royal.

The princess herself is made of just three tiny bricks.
