One of the Australian radio hosts embroiled in the royal prank call scandal is suing her employer for failing to provide a safe workplace.

Mel Greig was one of two DJs who in December phoned the London hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickess. Ms Greig and Michael Christian pretended to be members of the royal family, and were given private information about the duchess' condition.

The prank call went global after it was aired on 2Day FM and days later Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who put through the call, committed suicide. She reportedly held the DJs responsible for her death.

Ms Greig's lawyer has confirmed a claim has been filed with Australia's Fair Work Commission.

"I can confirm that a general protections application has been filed with Fair Work Australia on behalf of Mel Greig against Southern Cross Austereo alleging the radio station failed to maintain a safe workplace,'' Steven Lewis told Adelaide news website advertiser.com.au.

Ms Greig has been off work since the incident, and 2Day FM's parent company Southern Cross Austereo has in the past said it was working with her so that she could return to work "at a time that's right for her".

The company has not yet responded to news of the employment case.
