Fire fighters have brought a large bushfire near the South Australian town of Port Lincoln under control.
The blaze burnt through 1200 hectares yesterday and the wind direction had it headed straight towards the town. But winds dropped at about midnight, giving fire fighters a chance to bring the blaze under control.
Cooler conditions today have also acted in their favour.
The fire came within six kilometres of Port Lincoln but there are no reports of property or stock loss, although thick smoke blanketed the town and outlying properties were evacuated.
The town now seems to be out of danger but farmers still fear for their crops and stock.
“We’ve had a rotten trot lately with fires,” farmer John Hyde told Australia’s Seven News.
“We’ve had one after the other and this one here’s going to go for a fair while.”
Two weeks ago another bushfire in the same area destroyed seven homes and injured dozens of animals.
Hundreds of other small fires are burning across the state and it’s believed many were started by lightning strikes.
