An American college student who "wanted to see what it was really like to play the video game Grand Theft Auto" allegedly held a woman against her will and crashed a truck into a number of vehicles in a parking lot.

Police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana say Zachary Burgess, a 20-year-old lacrosse player from Alabama, stole the truck after finding it in a bar parking lot with the engine still running.

A woman sitting in the truck was allegedly held captive as he tried to escape, reports the Daily Mail.

"When he tried to flee the parking lot there were several cars blocking the way," Cpl Don Coppola told a local TV news station.

Burgess allegedly rammed a number of the vehicles before giving up and attempting to flee on foot. Police found him being held down by a number of witnesses. No one was hurt.

It was during questioning following the incident that Burgess told police he wanted to know what it was like to play Grand Theft Auto in real life.

He was been charged with nine counts of hit-and-run, theft of a motor vehicle and kidnapping.

The latest game in the ultra-violent Grand Theft Auto series was released last week to critical acclaim and huge sales.
