Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump has claimed Islamic State was founded by current President Barack Obama.

He made the comments at a rally in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, saying the group - also known as ISIS - has been "honouring" Mr Obama.

"ISIS is honouring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS. He is the founder of ISIS, okay? He's the founder. He founded ISIS, and I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton. Co-founder. Crooked Hillary Clinton."

Mr Trump has previously claimed Ms Clinton, his rival for President, "invented" Islamic State with "stupid policies".

"We should never have gotten [the troops] out the way we got out," he told the crowd.

"We unleashed terrible fury all over the Middle East. Instead of allowing some small forces behind to maybe, just maybe, keep it under control, we pulled it out. Then Obama came in, and normally you want to clean up and he made a bigger mess.

"We're not respected. We're laughed at all over the world."

US-based fact-checking site Politifact and CNN have previously debunked Trump's claims regarding the creation of Islamic State. The group was founded in 1999, and joined forces with al-Qaeda in the wake of the US-led invasion of Iraq, long before Mr Obama was President and Ms Clinton was Secretary of State.

Mr Obama's withdrawal of troops from Iraq, which critics say left a security vacuum in the country, was based on a plan inherited from his predecessor - Republican George W Bush.

The US disbanded the Iraqi military in 2003, and several high-ranking officers joined Islamic State, then known as al-Qaeda in Iraq.
